Patricia Homan, PhD, associate professor of sociology and director of research and strategic initiatives for the public health program, Florida State University; and visiting scholar at the GenderSci Lab, History of Science Department, Harvard University, presents “The impact of structural sexism on health and healthcare: Current evidence and future research priorities.” This is event is co-sponsored by the Committee on Degrees in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, Harvard University.

Abstract: In this talk, Patricia Homan will discuss her award-winning work developing new theory and measurement for the concept of structural sexism and examining its connection to health. Her talk will describe: what structural sexism is, how it has been measured, how it shapes the health of both women and men in the US, how sexism relates to other types of structural oppression (e.g., racism and heterosexism), and how future studies can build on this emerging line of research. Dr. Homan will also discuss new sexism research collaborations with Harvard GenderSci Lab.

This series delivers timely information on population science research and resources in a variety of formats. Each event features a different topic/theme by way of a special event, seminar, work-in-progress, mini methods workshop, resource information session, etc. Affiliated faculty members, students, and researchers share their current and future work, and some weeks we welcome guests who present on important resources available to Harvard scholars. In a true “exchange” format, lively dialogue and interchange occurs among attendees.
